Indonesia studies a ministerial regulation requiring AI developers to label AI-generated content

Indonesia's Ministry of Communication and Digital Affairs (Komdigi) is studying a ministerial regulation on labelling AI-generated content, including markers that help the public trace where digital content came from, according to a ministry press release of 17 October. Deputy Minister Nezar Patria, speaking at the Konvensi Humas Indonesia 2026 in Surakarta that day, said the regulation would have AI developers label the authenticity of the video and other digital media they produce, so that manipulated content can be told apart from authentic content. He pointed to authentication and provenance approaches using metadata that global technology companies are developing, and cited a video-call fraud in Hong Kong about two years ago in which a company lost 25 million US dollars after a finance employee made 15 transfers on the instructions of deepfaked executives. The government is also preparing a National AI Roadmap covering AI development and governance for 2026 to 2029, drawing on more than 400 institutions, communities, ministries and industry participants. The release gives no draft text or timetable for the regulation.

What it means for business: nothing to comply with yet; AI developers and platforms serving Indonesian users may want to follow the draft, which is aimed at labels and provenance markers on AI-generated content.
