NVIDIA announced on 13 October a five-year compute donation valued at $250 million to support agentic AI safety and security research in the United Kingdom, providing $50 million in compute access a year. Most of it will support the wider UK AI safety and security research community, with a proportion going to the British Open-Ended Learning and Discovery Lab (BOLD), led by the University of Oxford, the Science of Fundamental AI Research Lab (SOFAIR), led by UCL, and Imperial College London, across agentic foundation models and robotics safety. Compute will be delivered through UK-based NVIDIA Cloud Partners, with infrastructure hosted in the UK; NVIDIA says provider selection, technical architecture and commercial terms are still to be agreed. Research programmes will focus on secure agents, open-model security and real-world threat mitigations, including secure sandboxes, reproducible research and safety assessment benchmarks. UK AI Minister Kanishka Narayan called the commitment "a vote of confidence in our world-leading strength and expertise in AI research".
What it means for business: UK research groups working on the safety and security of AI agents may be able to draw on this compute, and the sandboxes and benchmarks it funds could later inform how firms test agents before deploying them.
