India to publish AI regulation consultation paper within a month

8 Oct 2026 · added 17 Oct 2026

Electronics and IT Minister Ashwini Vaishnaw said on 8 October that MeitY will publish a regulation-focused consultation paper on AI within a month, built on safety, a "human-first" approach, skilling and ensuring no one is left behind. He said the paper would cover harms from deepfakes and that the bulk of the responsibility would have to be taken by industry. ThePrint said this signals a shift from relying on existing laws and voluntary compliance under India's November 2025 AI Governance Guidelines. Public broadcaster News On AIR also reported the remarks.

What it means for business: firms serving India should expect proposed AI rules for consultation, likely covering deepfakes, safety and cybersecurity.
