US senators announce bill making AI agent operators liable for hacking

1 Oct 2026 · added 17 Oct 2026

Senators Hawley and Murphy announced the AI Agent Accountability Act, which would apply Computer Fraud and Abuse Act liability to operators of AI agents that cause hacking damage and to developers that fail to put in reasonable safeguards. It would also let federal and state attorneys general seek injunctions.

What it means for business: announced, not yet law; companies deploying agents should document safeguards.
